Yet another bright and colorful spot at KBIS 2016 was the Northstar Appliances display from Elmira Stove Works. In fact, even though the booth was tucked away against a back wall of the convention center, it was still a very popular spot. It was difficult for me to get pictures of the products because they were constantly surrounded by people oohing and aahing over their magnetic retro radiance.
2021 update: Northstar has introduced another style of 30″ retro stove. See the full story here.
Yes, right away we were drawn to these colorful, retro styled appliances. And such yummy colors! Robin’s Egg Blue, Buttercup Yellow and Candy Red — another great option for a vintage-style kitchen.
We liked the look of everything we saw at the booth, and made sure to inspect each piece. This Robin’s Egg Blue electric stove has a spacious interior and an easy-to-clean, flat cooktop.
The coordinating refrigerator reminded me of one that my grandmother had…
There’s the gas model of the stove in creamy Buttercup Yellow, sitting next to a lovely red Candy Red refrigerator.
Also on display, this French door retro style refrigerator with a bottom freezer for the vintage kitchen that needs some serious refrigerator space. It’s available in either a 24.8 or 19.8 cu. ft. total capacity, with loads of adjustable shelving and even an in refrigerator filtered water dispenser.
We also noticed that in part of the display, Elmira Stove Works used some fun modern laminate from Abet Laminati, finished with aluminum edging.
As part of their display, there was also a bar-height round retro diner styled table next to the booth that used Vitro’s Red Glacier boomerang laminate. Way to accessorize!
Of course, we think that our Retro Renovation® by Wilsonart® boomerang laminates would look fantastic in a kitchen paired with some of these fun Northstar Appliances, too! Hey, they even have a nice “Mint Green” color that might be a good match to our ‘Delightful Jade’ … and what about a Flamingo Pink range with countertops finished in our ‘First Lady Pink’ boomerangs?

So beautiful, but so expensive. Definitely not in my retro budget. Maybe my next retro renovating life. Lol

Sigh. I love Northstar appliances, especially the fridges. I have been checking the prices on the Northstar website for a while now. They’re very expensive, even in Canada where I live. The new retro GE fridges are not available here yet, which is mystfying. Not too long ago, a secondhand Northstar fridge in mint green for $800 Cdn turned up on Kijiji, a local seller website. I hesitated because it was ten years old and the door had been removed for safety. Big mistake. I’ve been kicking myself ever since. I am considering an older fridge, but I hate the thought of defrosting. What are you supposed to do with all your food while it’s defrosting?

We splurged and bought the fridge, stove, vent hood and dishwasher door panel, when we recently renovated our awful kitchen. Really love the appliances, and the colour is so cheerful, it makes me smile, every time I go into the kitchen. We chose Robin’s Egg Blue (it was hard to decide), a perfect match for the chrome set we ordered from Acme. Now…on to our awful bathroom. Still saving for that!

Love all those colors! I tried looking at the Abet Laminati page but the link does not work. I could not find their web page online either. I love the laminate they used 🙂

We own the Microwave in the turquoise(ish) color way and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I can’t begin to tell you how good the build quality and ease of use are with this dynamo. It’s the centerpiece, along with the turquoise Kohler sink, of our Kitchen redo in our 1962 Mid Century Modern beach house in SC. I’d love to send a pic or two.

‘s stuff.I love the retro appliances BUT they are way to over priced for me. I have a 1963 Frigidaire Flair stove and anew GE retro style fridg with the freezer on the bottom. The retro style GE fridg was around 1200 dollars and not quite worth it. It’s a GE fridg with a rounded top on the front and brushed aluminum handles that really do not look like the 1950’s stuff to me. I grew up around a 1959 Kenmore 40″ range and refrigerator so I kinda know what they looked like, the 50’s stuff. 🙂

what is the microwave sitting on? it looks like it could be a dishwasher. is it simply a dummy cabinet?

Another person who would buy that stuff in a heart beat if it didn’t cost so much.

Your description of people crowding around, oohing and aahing over these made me wonder something. I’ve never been to any of the generic Home Shows, or a convention like this one, but we just came from Modernism Week(end) in Palm Springs, where the eye candy is endless and awe-inspiring. There is plenty to get excited about, and people do! I can’t imagine the same reactions in a giant sea of brown, beige, greige, granite and stainless. Did you see excited reactions to the mainstream displays? Why are people so afraid of using color if they love it and are drawn to it?!

I think that there was a goodly amount of ooohing and ahhhing at KBIS – many of the displays were gorgeous, with beautifully designed spaces, even if you weren’t a fan of the particular style or color. I tend to think some of the best of the best interior designers in the world are creating these displays, because they are so financially important to the companies paying for them. Note, this wasn’t really a consumer show – its target audience were professional designers including kitchen and bath shops and home builders.

I inquired about buying the large refrigerator but the price was OUTRAGEOUS $6,000 plus shipping from Canada
