Flooring for a 1970s kitchen or living area: Moroccan-style Filigree luxury vinyl flooring from Mannington

Pam Kueber - Updated: August 18, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

Nosing around flooring websites for what’s new, I spotted this new Moroccan-style “Filigree” luxury vinyl flooring just out from Mannington — note, it’s sheet flooring incorporating a 6″ tile design. This tile reminds me of sheet flooring from the 1970s — hurray for pattern finally coming back to vinyl floor tile!

Moroccan- and Cuban-style tiles are a very popular contemporary look today. But — designs fairly similar to this were also all the rage in the 1970s, albeit there were real color-colors then. If you have a 1970s house, I think this tile would work given its faded look. (The full-strength colors in another Mannington line, Deco, make that tile too contemporary for a 70s restoration look, in my opinion.)

Filigree comes in four washed out colors. The other two:

In the 70s my parents replaced worn linoleum in our eat-in kitchen with sheet vinyl (Armstrong?) in a tile pattern similar to what you have posted, but they chose a rich color palette that was not too common then– a deep teal was the primary color, and there were many other shades incorporated if you got down and looked closely. It was low luster, looked brand new forever and never had to be replaced even for our family of 4 kids and a dog. I remember that the design hid crumbs, etc. so well that if you dropped something on the floor, you had to get down on your hands and knees and lay the side of your cheek on the floor to get a 3-D effect of whatever you dropped to find it. It always looked good and people raved about it for many years.

    @Pam
If this vinyl “reminds (you) of sheet flooring from the 1970s” can you maybe give us a couple examples of the actual flooring from the 1970’s you are thinking about?

Hi Norman, I don’t think I’ve showed any images on the blog. I should also say: Vinyl AND tile. Here’s a book that heads in the 70s direction: http://amzn.to/2oYMLDz (affiliate link) These Armstrong books are great resources for decorating ideas — they really pushed the envelope

Thank you, Pam. I thought maybe you had something specific in mind. I guess maybe you just meant “feel” like the 1970’s. ;^)

We have this in our ’20’s-30’s era bathroom! They were running a special where you got the Platinum flooring at the Gold price. So warm and cushy on the feet. I’m in love.

I saw this pattern at Lowes awhile back
    https://m.lowes.com/pd/Armstrong-Royelle-12-ft-W-Rock-Hill-Stone-High-Gloss-Finish-Sheet-Vinyl/999978374
Looks straight outta the 70s to me.

      Nice, also very 70s!

The ’70s was a period of transition from linoleum to vinyl. I’m trying to remember what was popular then, and all I can recall is that people had actually started to carpet their kitchens with kitchen carpeting that was reminiscent of indoor-outdoor carpet. What I remember was the advent of vinyl squares that people could cut and install themselves. Orange-and-brown Spanish-style tiles were popular.

I followed the link but couldn’t find the “Hey Beige” shrug

The Brass is what I referred to as Beige.

We got ours for 1.94 sq ft plus installation. Mannington has three levels of quality – silver, gold and platinum. We went with the gold level because we wanted a bit of an upgrade but didn’t want super cushy vinyl. We wanted it to lay close to the existing vinyl. Hope that helps!

The price we paid was $2.64/sq ft. Total price with installation in our 7×11′ bathroom was around $450.

I love the Deco pattern, but the Filigree pattern in that particular kitchen seems like white on white. It reminds me of a friend’s visit to a crime scene that had been analyzed by the forensic team and the evidence all covered with tarps. She wrote a poem about the experience, the last line of which was “Who knew there’d be/so much white.”

Pam, I have a Congoleum hardcover book, circa mid-70’s, that shows flooring similar to this (and many, many, MANY more patterns). I would love to send it to you for your Retro Renovation archives.
