LaGardo Tackett — 1958 ‘egghead’ condom holder is just one witty chapter in an amazing career

LaGardo Tackett Think egghead - furnitureloungeHere’s a wonderful vintage oddity — a woddity – that I learned about yesterday: The witty “egghead” ceramics designed by LaGardo Tackett and marketed by Playboy and Esquire magazines as bedside storage for condoms back in the swinging 60s. A witty woddity: An egg. To hold condoms. Get it? And “Think”, before you… err, leap, I guess. Of course, a vintage find that had me at first giggling, quickly led me on a little journey of exploration: LaGardo Tackett was a talented and influential designer, and I was able to find an AMAZING article about his life. At Home, by Bill Bryson — Excellent holiday reading

It’s that time of year, so I think I’ll have a few more stories on nifty gifties for the holiday season, then get back to retro-wonderland. I am obsessed with houses and especially, the history of what is in them, and why. In case you haven’t noticed. A few weeks ago, I saw that one of my favorite writers of all time, Bill Bryson, had written a book seeking answers to this very question. The book is At Home: A Short History of Private Life. Yes, I bought a copy off the Amazon — using the wee earnings that I get from my Pamazon store – my favorite house books — here on this blog. Bryson’s At Home is available in both hard cover and paperback. It’s 532 pages long… I am on page 178 so far… and yes, I am liking this book very much. Bill Bryson’s books are always very… genial, bemused… easy to read. Heck yeah there is more →

Jessi Arrington — Second-hand rose prophet

I first watched this video about three weeks ago — and I keep thinking about it. What a smiling rebel this woman, Jessi Arrington, is. I love the “life lessons” she shares from her experience acquiring clothes solely from thrift stores or as hand-me-downs. For example: That shopping second-hand saves money and the environment… It is almost physiologically impossible to be in a bad mood when you’re wearing bright red pants… Fitting in is way over-rated… Developing your own unique personal style is a great way to tell the world something about you, without having to say a word… and, “It’s okay to let go… I don’t need to get emotionally attached to these things, because around the corner there’s always going to be another crazy, colorful shiny outfit just waiting for me, if I put a little love in my heart and look…” Good advice. No: Great advice, and in terms of your decorating style, too. First spotted on The Simple Dollar

Made in America Holiday Gift Guide: Handmade treasures on etsy.com

uncommon retro modern clockYes, I would be remiss in my continuing coverage of Made in the USA gifts if I did not point discriminating shoppers to etsy.com — the leading online marketplace for handmade artistry. I spent several hours window shopping, and came up with 16 gifts to love. Above: A modern clock with a face available in three colors — desert red, sea blue or chartreuse — made by married duo Vincent and Jessie Leman in Valparaiso, Indiana. It’s $115. They have many other handmade clocks in their etsy shop, “uncommom”.

made in america holiday gifts from etsyClick on over here to see my Treasury — where you can look at each of my picks and dive deeper into etsy for yourself. As with ebay, it’s all about choosing your search times to uncover what you might like… As you can see, I’m partial to crocheted granny square afghans and scarves… mixed media collages about houses… ceramic birdhouses… toys made out of Fox River Mill red-heeled socks — things I’d generally feel safe about buying online without seeing in person. And how about commissioning a house portrait — the selection of artists on etsy who will do these is huge. But, I bet you better get your order in soon.

Vintage eye doctor’s eye chart — backlit

vintage moe lighting

There are three of these NOS Moe lights

I kind of apologize about showing lighting all the time. But when I see NOS — and I guess I see it a lot — I wanna get the treasures, especially if they are *bargains* in front of you. There are multiples of some of these lights — be sure to check the listings closely, there might be enough to “do a room”.
Tip to using the ebay carousel: To go to a particular item, click on its photo (NOT on the ebay logo) — then, click on the lime green “View and Bid” box, which will take you to ebay. Disclosure: When you buy anything from these ebay carousels or after you click into ebay here, it nets me a teensy commission.

I really really want this. It is BACKLIT. But I am looking the other way. $195 Buy-It-Now.
