Vintage seagulls

pam kueber - Updated: February 9, 2017

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

vintage-seagullsIt’s a small world — I literally bumped into reader Cindy (center) as I headed to shop in Northamptom this weekend. This is really kind of freaky, because that’s a half hour from her house and an hour from my house, and there are 6,497,967 people in the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Cindy had been going to tag sales with friends. She picked up this trio of vintage seagull wall art for $5. I think you’d call them “in the danish modern style” – although it might be more true to say “popular 70s.” I think these are great for patios… I have a brassy seagull wall hanging, also a steal $, above our barbecue in the U-shaped patio at the front of our house. Well done, Cindy. See you at the James Taylor concert at Tanglewood in two weeks!

I have a Ravencrest clock shaped like a bicycle found in thrift shop, can’t find much about it, runs with a battery, well in researching a gal on etsy is selling the same clock, with a 1963 stamp on back with Ravencrest on the stamp, but she also has a decal named Masketeers, she has it selling for $110. Not sure if these were made in the 60’s these clocks to look retro, because the clock part looks 60’s but with both blocks running on battery and not a electrical plug in, these 2 clocks simply couldn’t be from the 60’s, you can’t tell me both were remade to let a batter run them, so not sure, but I have a feeling they came out in the 80’s, anybody know if this Masketeers was making stuff in the 80’s?

I am so happy to find fellow owners of the ducks/geese/whatever. Mine have feathers on the tops of their heads, which my son insists makes them mythical. I have two identical ones, bodies of red painted wood, with the same rear feathers as the ones pictured here. They were in a thrift store in Florida ($9 for both) and have part of the Masketeers 1968 stamp visible on the back. I love them and think they are perfect for my 70s FL home. I’m glad I am not the only one who appreciates their design and their lineage, as my son thinks they are less than spectacular. Does anyone have an idea of how much these delightful creatures are actually worth?

I was looking at a brass and wrought iron sailing ship that belonged to my grandmother. I was looking at the back and saw the stamp, Masketeers Inc. 1964.

Hi again, I think I should have given a little better description of the sculptor incase they made more than one type. It is about 37 in long & 19 in tall. It is made of black walnut and oak wood and brass. One building has a brass top & spike. There are brass wires on the bridge and 2 brass birds on a rock or cliff that is at the right end of the bridge. The city landscape that is on the left of the bridge consist of 3 plains/levels, includes 11 buildings visually speaking (5pc of wood).
Thanks for any info you can give me

This set of Ducks, not seagulls, was manufactured by Masketeers, Inc. in Belington WV during the late 1990’s. I have the exact same set.

Hi, My grandfather Austin “Bud” Blake worked for them in Belington, WV. It closed in the 80’s. I think my grandmother has the geese hanging in her house and my brother has the toy soldier cabinet in my nephew’s room.
