Suzy of Georgia Peachez
Suzy aka Georgia Peachez

Every year, as a gift to readers, I buy a wreath from Suzy aka Georgia Peachez for this giveaway. Thank you, readers, for being THE BEST. I luv you! Suzy always jumps to help out. She gave me a great price (her wreaths now sell for $250! each!) — and quick as I asked, she made this special wreath just for us. She said:

Pam, I made a wreath with my two favorite elements, a knee hugger elf and a reindeer.

Heck to the yeah, knee hugger elf and reindeer! Thank you, Suzy!

I think one of my favorite parts about the holiday is a newer tradition I have started. When I was in about the 8th grade I read a book that was Christmas themed. it appealed to me and I have read it every year since…just about. But only recently did I force some friends of mine to read it. And they all loved it too! So I started hosting a party every year around Christmas so that we all get together and talk about the book. I usually come up with games and trivia “tests”…it isn’t super old, but it warms my retro soul every year!!!

I love the *smell* of Christmas. All the cooking, baking and pine scents remind me of being a kid & how exciting Christmas was. Visiting family, picking a tree, baking with Mom and making decorations… And now I still love the time with family and I’m excited to start new traditions with our baby boy who will be celebrating his first Christmas this year!

My parents migrated here after WWII and they celebrated Christmas very simply but one felt the spirit. They had glass ornaments and a fresh Christmas trees most time. I recall my mother buying the aluminum tree with the lights but after awhile went back to the traditional tree. I have old ornaments and new but they are glass mostly and decorate with Santa Clauses everywhere and anywhere I find a space. Each year I add on to my collection.

My favorite part of Christmas is buying special gifts for special people, I love to see the surprise in their faces when its the perfect gift. Planning our special meals and party foods is also a fave for me. We have a tradition of homemade cinnamon buns for our Christmas morning open house.

Family traditions are my favorite part of the Christmas celebration. Those traditions that sustained our family through generations continue to be important for my children even though they are now adults. I was the baby in my family and everyone worked very hard and participated in keeping the miracle of Santa Claus alive for me years after many other children had learned the truth. It was their self-less pursuit of keeping the dream alive for me that still brings me to tears when I think about all that they did to keep me believing. Unknown to them at the time were the many lessons that their great efforts taught me; family will do anything for each other, good things do happen when people gather with a single goal in mind, a good imagination is what dreams are made of, and a little girl who believes never stops even when someone suggests another truth! Santa Claus continues to be an important tradition, because this little girl still believes!

I have always loved Christmas because of all the vintage items that are out there that evoke pleasant memories for me. Years ago I made a ball ornament wreath from my Mom’s old collection of Shiny Brites. It has had a place of honor in all of our homes and now has been joined by 2 more for my adult children’s homes! But my very favorite thing about Christmas is collecting the 1940’s pine cone Elves from Japan! Our collection grows every year and is almost now to hoarding. I’m sure the kids will take care of that, as some seem to disappear every year and show up in other houses. Thanks for your Retro bits everyday!
