Gone Kitschmas Krazy for ornament wreaths

pam kueber - Updated: August 18, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

vintage ornament wreathDo you ever get so crazzzzzy obsesssssed with something that you lose an entire week of your life? Call me binge-crafter, because this week I could barely focus on anything but ornie-hoarding so that I could make more of these vintage ornament wreaths using Georgia Peachez’ instructions. C.R.A.Z.Y. As in: I could barely concentrate on the blog (ask Kate, she’ll tell you) while I scoured all of Berkshire County for vintage Christmas ornaments. I’ve been buying from ebay and etsy, too. Argh. Mid-November is not the right time to hunt for vintage ornaments, too much competition from similarly obsessed, late-planning crafters. Have a great weekend. Me? I hot glue, therefore, I am. Tune back in on Monday for more info, photos and tips to come from my DIY session making this wreath, which turned out F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S.

    Beautiful wreath, Pam!

I like the colors you chose – frosty aqua is always “Christmas green” to me because my Grama has one of those ceramic trees with the little bulbs, all done in aqua. My family had one too, but ours was a more traditional shade of green; her tree always seemed more magical.

I too have been hoarding vintage ornaments – and was happy to find knee-hugger elves at my Hobby Lobby!!!

We have so many ornaments mostly vintage, we can’t use them all despite having two Christmas trees, so I probably have enough for a wreath. But, with teaching and final exams coming up there is pretty much no time to work on the wreath. Maybe this is the year I finally do it.

Beautiful work, Pam! I’m digging your color choices. I’m going to be making one too! (Gotta get out my xmas box after my move this weekend.) Thanks for the inspiration. Is there a place where folks can upload their wreaths when they’re done? I’d like to see everyones creations.

I made one of these several years ago after seeing them on Georgia Peachez blog. It was huge–over 24″ across. I used lots of scruffy Shiny Brites. You know where this is going…I dropped it. Still hurts to just think about it.

I couldn’t even bear to enter the contest knowing what a klutz I am!

    Yours looks fantastic!

      Kate,
I am near Madison and had enough snow that I needed wipers for drive home. My maples are not done dropping leaves yet so will have to rake what I can and forget rest.

The fair weather for putting up outside decorations and lights is ending soon around here. It gets dark so soon too.

II also have a NOS Glass ball tree like your video instructions. It will go up this year if we find a place in our c1978 colonial.

Beautiful Pam! You did a superb job; your vintage ornament wreath is gorgeous! Just as Josephine said, you should have made a video.

Please make a video of how to make Georgia Peachez vintage wreaths, Pam. I love your videos and Kate’s videos too.

Hey wait a minute — I could swear that the ornament by the elf’s left ear was on our family’s tree back in 1962. I need it for MY wreath. Just kidding. Your wreath is very classy, with just the right amount of elfin whimsy.

    Pam,
In my trips to the Salvation Army, Goodwill and St Vinny’s ( and others) vintage ornaments are great but you may also find lots more of the just old or slightly “distressed” ornaments for the less visible areas to fill in. I have also seen blogs that advise using nail polish remover and tissue or cotton ball to slightly remove finish to antique brand new ones to look older. the brand new ones are already discounted and will be even more after Christmas for summer crafting.

I add a few ‘news’ in with the mostly ‘olds’ – a girl can be flexible, you know;)

It is beautiful and terrific. I always want to try to make one. I wish you would have done a video of instructions.
