Whirlpool Sunset Bronze kitchen appliances: Would you?

pam kueber - Updated: August 18, 2021

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

Sunset Bronze applianceDoing some research about appliances, we bumped into this story in Whirlpool’s press room: Seems like the company is considering introducing a new color, “Sunset Bronze.”

I’m kinda into this Sunset Bronze, because it’s like the drawer fronts in American Brand Pioneer kitchens married the metal dome of my vintage Imperialite pendant light and gave birth to a rosy love child. I’m not in the market for new appliances myself, but if I were working on a retro kitchen project, I might play around with a mood board that considered these. The are different. And they are warm.

Bronze applianceThe Whirlpool’s PR rep was very helpful in supplying images, but seemed to be towing the line on whether the company is even bringing these to market. I think the story is, Whirlpool showed off this color at some trade show to gauge interest, and now they need to decide. Officially, Whirlpool told us, “We received tremendous positive response to the introduction of Sunset Bronze and are looking forward to bringing it to market in the future. Although we do not have a hard launch date yet, please continue to check Whirlpool.com for updates.” Whether this color makes the cut or not, it is nice to see a major mainstream manufacturer considering mass market options other than stainless, black and white.

What do you think of this new color, readers?
Would you? Could you?

Thanks for showing us this fridge. It is an interesting color, but not quite the coppertone of old. I would have to see it in person. I’m not sure it would go with my knotty pine kitchen.

Also thanks for mentioning Fisher Paykel. That fridge looks close the right size for my space–67″ high is just an inch too much, but when we replace the one in there now we can rebuild the cabinet above.

We’re in the process of rebuilding the cabinet above also LOL. Even though it’s counter depth, there is a lot more room than the fridge that came with the house.

I can’t afford the Big Chill appliances, so a warmer-colored assortment of mainstream appliances is a welcome alternative. I’d want to make sure the particular color played well with the 1940s and 1950s pastels, though.

Trudi mentioned rose gold — now that’s a color I would love to see! It’s always been my favorite shade of gold.

In my forever house, I’m going to have something with a lot more color than that. Still, nice to see something other than stainless.

After months of searching in vain for a sixties fridge in good condition, we gave up and bought a Fisher Paykel 2 door, bottom freezer fridge in white with NO ice and water in the door. It has crisp squared off lines and edges and has a Vintage feel to it. It also has a similar look to the early to mid sixties fridges in some of my old magazines. It’s a good replacement for the real thing. The Sunset Bronze is a really nice color and it is such an improvement over black and stainless.

      One kinda like this?: https://retrorenovation.com/2008/04/16/a-refrigerator-for-tight-spaces-fisher-paykel-curved-door/

Retro Renovation readers have liked Fisher Paykels because of their size and price….

That’s the one. The interior is sleek and well made too. I didn’t realize that they were popular on RR. We found it after spending hours on the internet looking for something that had a retro feel.

We got an Amana like that because I dislike stainless and did not want the break-prone ice in the door. I also like the bottom freezer. The MCM house I grew up in had bottom freezer but you had to open the door then pull dwn the freezer door.
So far it is lasting well.

I bought a Maytag bottom freezer a few years back in white smooth finish, then ordered the stainless handles. The Maytag emblem is stainless and retro looking and it actually looks pretty good. I bought it with the intent that I could later paint the doors turquoise when I have my 1957 range redone (its currently white as well)

The color is pretty but … I don’t think that I would want such modern looking appliances in my retro kitchen. If the style was retro I would like it better 🙂

This reminds me of the coppertone of old – my original 1959 range hood is near this color.

Last I was in an appliance store, they had some items near this color, so I’m thinking W isn’t the first to try this.

I think how popular it becomes will depend on how much the tv shows push it. I blame them for all the SS/granite.

I’m currently shopping for a new to me home and all I see is ss/granite “upgrades” — I’m starting to not even open those listings. At least in the MCM houses folks picked the color of appliances/tile to make their own uniquely theirs, but now? Ever house is the same, and I don’t want to pay the higher price for the updates I want to rip out, blech!

Yes, I would. I think they would pair nicely with original mid-century brass or copper lighting and hardware in the kitchen. Also would look great with wood tone or painted cabinets.

I think this may be influenced by the popularity of rose gold in fashion and beauty.
I like the color very much and agree it’s wonderful to see something different from a “mainstream” appliance company!
Would I buy it for my home? It would depend on the home I was in. The home we have now we will be selling in a few years so no, I will go with something more sellable.
My forever home? I could definitely see it there!
