1960s starburst-white and orange laminate kitchen

pam kueber - Updated: April 8, 2019

Retro Renovation stopped publishing in 2021; these stories remain for historical information, as potential continued resources, and for archival purposes.

1960s kitchen with wall refrigerator freezerHere is a kitchen style that we have not seen featured on the blog before, as I recall. It’s a kitchen with cabinets made from two contrasting colors or designs of laminate. In this case: A starburst white laminate is the “field” color — and yo, a Brady Bunch orange is added to the Revco built-in refrigerator-freezer, wall cabinet doors and as a pop of trim. This kitchen is for sale — click on through for more yummy photos…1960s-kitchenTake notice of the vintage woven window shade and the dishwasher — lovely!

1960s-orange-and-starburst-laminate-kitchenI cropped this shot to show that the orange is laminate — not paint. You gotta love the Fred Flinstone floor, too!

(Remember, you can replicate this style — although not exactly, and not in coppertone — with knobs and starburst backplates available from Rejuvenation.

1960s turquoise bathroom with mermaid shower door

The person who is selling the kitchen also sent me photos of the bathroom. It also is getting gutted, and she is happy to sell all the bathroom hardware as well. Hall Mack fish towel rings! A mermaid shower door (note: Be aware of the potential un-tempered glass issue — consult with a professional.) She even mentions: A toilet set embedded with pennies… And do I spy with my little eye maybe a nice mirror with built-in cosmetic box?

Here is the craigslist link, all this stuff is on Long Island, NY, no prices “make an offer”: 1960s laminate kitchen cabinets.

Wow, very nice. I have that very same kitchen flooring in my entryway. Anyone know anything about it??

Wow. I would be so happy to glide around this kitchen! I wonder if I could price out having that double oven shipped to WI. This is a time to try uship, yes? All that starburst laminate makes me happy! I am guessing those super cool toilets are wall hung. Oh, how I love it all!!

Love the orange kitchen, the starburst laminate and my heart especially beats for the sea themed bath! It makes me sad to hear that it is to be ripped out and replaced, however, I DO give the owners “props” because they recognize the value of the fixtures and decor and are offering it for sale to those who also value MCM style. They could have simply ripped it out and thrown it away like so many other people do when they remodel older homes.

Yes, I agree. When we added on to our house last year, we got a lot of salvage items from a house built in 1948. The new owners were gutting it and putting in all new everything. So we benefitted by receiving their custom-built vanities, sinks, medicine cabinets, etc. — all for a song. Made our addition look like it’s always been here. I’m glad those owners went the craigslist route, instead of just tossing it all in a dump somewhere.

Seriously — it breaks my heart to see that all destroyed. If it were all in disrepair I’d understand, but it’s WONDERFUL. That starburst laminate? YUM.

Wow! This picture belongs in Pam’s gallery of 60’s kitchens. Such a wealth of detail, not your typical mid century modest home. Well taken care of through the years! Surprised that the baths are in such great looking condition for their ages too. Never saw lavender colored fixtures before. Don’t condemn the sellers, what was once considered avantgarde and cutting edge in its day of introduction just doesn’t cut it anymore for most – especially the poor maligned laminates.

Wow. I so want that kitchen! I have no idea what the kitchen in my house originally looked like…it was redone somewhere along the line (80s, I would guess) and is basically hideous — though we have tried to spiff it up by painting the cabinets and walls and putting in new laminate countertops. Someday we are going to gut and start over and make it look like 1958 again. I would die to find pieces like this when we’re ready for a kitchen makeover. I hope these find a wonderful new home!

    The bathroom is great, too!

What a fabulous time capsule! It’s a shame that it has survived so many years and now is meeting its demise, but hopefully the fixtures will find a happy home to live on in all its fabulousness. I just finished putting the final touches a newly ceated pink bathroom because all my bathrooms had been updated in the 80’s. What I wouldn’t give to have inherited these lovelies.

Wow, I LOVE this! What a shame to tear it all out. Although I do have to say that the underwater-themed bathroom is a little over the top for me, and I’m not a fan of the kitchen floor. It would just break my heart to see this gutted and replaced with stainless steel and granite, but I’m glad that the owner is making an attempt to salvage the interior instead of trashing it.

Love the house, especially those kitchen cabinets+the orange accents! I think the floor and the greenish glass throw me off a little, but at least the room has personality. I don’t care if a home isn’t decorated in my taste or isn’t completely period-correct, as long as it looks like the owner made their own choices (instead of following every current trend like a sheep. 🙂
Thanks for sharing the pics of such a unique home!
