Mid century kitchen sinks — authentic retro choices from Kohler, Ceco, and Bootz

Pam Kueber - October 8, 2008, Updated: September 28, 2021

Kohler seems to have offered a double-bowl, metal-rimmed porcelain enamel on cast iron kitchen sink for… decades.

The most authentic kitchen sink for a mid century kitchen: My go-to design is a double-bowl, metal (hudee)-rimmed, porcelain enamel on cast iron (or steel) kitchen sink. I know of three places that you can get these in the U.S.

Kohler Delafield kitchen sink:

The Kohler Delafield can be purchased lots of places.

The Kohler Delafield kitchen sink likely has been around a long, long time. As I update this story in Sept. 2021, it’s available in white or almond. It is porcelain enamel on cast iron, 32″ wide, easy to source, and yes, I am serious about the metal hudee rim.

Ceco san clemente kitchen sink:

Ceco has the same style sink — also on cast iron — and typically offers a larger palette of colors.

There’s a second company — Ceco — that also offers a sink in this style — their San Clemente model, also with metal rim. They also seem to have more color options, albeit neutrals. Pricing may also differ.

Bootz Garnet kitchen sink:

Finally, there is a budget version of this type of sink — it’s enamel on steel (rather than on cast iron) — from Bootz.

K-5817-3-0 is the top-mounted (drop-in) version which looks like it could not ever be installed with a metal frame

    Hi Pam,

I am trying to order the Delafield sink and the lady I am ordering it from insists I need to use the drop-in instead of the tile-in version (K-5950-4-0) for laminate. Is she right? I want to put the metal frame around my sink and have it flush with my laminate and the drop-in version seems to have a raised edge.

Thanks for these resources. You can email me at the address I’ve used above.

    Cheers,
    Erin

Erin, you need to talk to Kohler about this…

Hey – Love the Delafield double-bowl sink with metal rim, but I can’t find a basin protector for it. Do you have any idea where I can get one that fits? I can find some appropriately-sized protectors, but the drain hole looks like it’s in the wrong place…

Indeed there are no more in stock. *sadness*

It looks like the single-bowl might still be available from faucetdepot.com – I just ordered one, anyway. I’ll let you all know if they get back to me and tell me it’s discontinued…

I’ve got a large Kohler sink with a hudee rim in my laundry room and need to change out the countertop! Help! Can it be done? What’s involved?

Looking for a cast iron double bowl sink.

What I’d really like is HUGE Bowl on one side, long and wide enough and deep enough for cookie sheets and large pans. Bowl #2 would just be a small shallow one for the garbage disposal stuff

Cobalt blue would be PERFECT but I’d settle for PLAIN OLD WHITE 🙂

    Any ideas??

    dcgrl,

Check the sinks at Mac the Antique Plumber – but I don’t think that they have anything “huge”. Meanwhile, I will ask John at deabath.com what he has to say about this. Finally – I had four sinks removed when I acquired my kitchen. The rims came off fine, all except one. I think they can be salvaged with care…Let

    Pam,
do you know if anyone sells just the metal rim to go around sinks? I have a fantastic, huge cast iron sink that I want to reuse after replacing our countertops, but a plumber I had in recently said I couldn’t because no one makes that edging anymore and it’s next to impossible to remove the sink without damaging it.

This can’t be true, can it?

    Thanks!

contact Vance Industries for metal rims for vintage sinks like I did. They will have all the sizes you will possibly need to install your sink
